What began as a modest weekend run has now blossomed into one of Baltimore’s most inspiring fitness and community movements — and the city has taken notice.
On a crisp and golden Saturday morning, Harbor East Run Club gathered as usual for their weekly run — but this one was anything but ordinary. Midway through post-run cool downs and cheerful conversation, the club’s Membership Coordinator, Antwan, stepped forward with a surprise that left the group stunned and deeply moved.
Antwan proudly presented Certificates of Recognition from Mayor Brandon M. Scott — not only to the club’s founders, Olajide Aderomilehin and Prosper Odilatu, but also to Harbor East Run Club as a whole, honoring the tremendous work the group has done in promoting health, unity, and positivity across Baltimore.
The awards, personally signed by the Mayor, acknowledged the club’s grassroots growth, dedication to building an inclusive and uplifting space, and their tangible impact on physical and mental well-being within the community.
A Movement Born from Five Runners and a Vision
Harbor East Run Club officially launched on April 22, 2024, when co-founders Olajide and Prosper gathered a group of just five runners for a casual jog along the waterfront. What started as a simple way to stay active and connect with others has exploded into a movement.
Just over a year later, the club now boasts:
- 600+ active members in its WhatsApp group, coordinating meetups, supporting each other, and sharing personal victories;
- 3,000+ Instagram followers and a total social reach exceeding 200,000, helping promote Baltimore as a city of health, strength, and togetherness.
Their weekly runs — open to all paces and backgrounds — have become a beacon for connection in the city. From themed runs like “Rep Your Flag” and hiking adventures to wellness partnerships and volunteer efforts, Harbor East Run Club is more than a fitness group — it’s a cultural force.
Honoring the Heart of the Club
Receiving the award from the Mayor’s Office felt like a full-circle moment for Olajide and Prosper. What they built out of passion and purpose now carries a seal of civic recognition.
“I was speechless,” said Olajide. “We never set out to get awards — we just wanted to create something positive. But seeing how many lives this has touched and then being honored by the Mayor — it’s surreal.”
Prosper echoed the sentiment: “It’s proof that small ideas, when rooted in community and consistency, can make a real difference.”
Antwan, who masterminded the surprise, shared, “I wanted to make sure they knew how appreciated they are — not just by us, but by the entire city.”
What’s Next for HERC?
The recognition from Mayor Scott is a milestone, but it’s just the beginning. With continued growth, planned youth engagement programs, and larger city-wide events on the horizon, Harbor East Run Club is poised to deepen its roots and widen its reach.
